The Biblical Foundation of Marriage

God created marriage. The first two humans, Adam and Eve, were created to live in harmony with God and each other. It may have been the longest marriage ever. Adam lived 930 years, but we are not told the age of Eve. Methuselah may hold the record for the longest marriage because the Bible tells us he lived for 969 years.

Many attack or completely disregard the Book of Genesis as a guide from our Creator for human marriage. God’s plan for marriage was designed to be for one man and one woman to be married for a lifelong relationship. We know that Noah of the Great Flood days did not depart from God’s plan for marriage because we read in Genesis 6:18: “But I will establish My covenant with you; and you shall go into the ark—you, your sons, your wife, and your sons’ wives with you [eight people].” In Genesis 11:29 we read: Then Abram and Nahor took wives: the name of Abram’s wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor’s wife, Milcah.

However, because sin entered the world when Adam and Eve disobeyed God’s instructions in the garden of Eden, it didn’t take long for God’s original plan to be discarded. In Genesis 4:18 we read: And Lamech took unto him two wives. And regarding Esau we read: So Esau went to Ishmael and took Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael, Abraham’s son, the sister of Nebajoth, to be his wife in addition to the wives he had. But polygamy was never God’s plan and purpose for His creation. Just as God has committed Himself to be faithful to those who serve and obey Him, so He desires for us as husbands and wives to be faithful to each other in a life-long relationship. Because of man’s sinful nature, it has always been hard to accept and obey God’s plan for monogamous marriage. This is because of what the Bible refers to as “the lust of the flesh” (Galatians 5:16). Sadly, so many find out after mistakes have been made that God’s plan would have been best for everyone concerned.

What has happened to God’s sacred covenant for marriage in America? Marriage has been attacked by the highest levels of our government. On June 26, 2015, the Supreme Court gave sanction to so-called same-sex marriage. I don’t want to overwhelm you with statistics, but the truth is that America is currently more than ever plagued with increasing divorce rates, single parents—mostly women, sex and living together before marriage—that’s if they ever do get married, same-sex legalized so-called marriage, and the devastating effect of the pornographic industry. Then, added to this we have the morally confusing degenerate transgender insanity which is completely opposed to empirical biological science. I should not have to say this, but there are inescapable and undeniable biological differences between men and women. The chromosomes tell the story!

Christians have believed and known for a long time that the three great weapons Satan uses against humanity are money, power, and sex. We have sadly seen such examples of Satan’s work in the highest levels of our government, and perhaps even more tragic among well-known names of professing Christians. Therefore, we can see that biblical standards for marriage and sexual relationships are being ignored. Surely, we should clearly see that the Supreme Court’s ruling in 1963 to remove the Bible from public schools has had a huge detrimental accumulating effect. The Bible and such public displays as the Ten Commandments are being continually marginalized by a progressive woke ideology as not relevant to today’s society. By the way, the use of the word “woke” is a crazy departure from the accepted grammatical usage of English.

What are Christians to do in this increasingly ungodly environment? Is there anything we can do to stem the tide of lawlessness and outright rebellion against God and His Word? Yes, but it will take individual Christians everywhere to be bold enough to stand true to biblical standards whatever the consequences may be. We can do what the Bible says: ”Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore, take unto you the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all to stand" (Ephesians 6:10-13).

Yes, these are evil days, and we as Christians should not bury our heads in the sand. We should be active in prayer, fasting, and believing in God for a nationwide revival—the only thing that could turn this nation around to an increase of righteousness. After fulfilling our responsibilities spiritually through prayer and fasting, we should vote "No" on any proposed political legislation to disparage traditional marriage.
