Our Amazing, Imperfect Universe

Many will be surprised at the title of this article. What is there about the universe that is imperfect? Well, read on and discover how this is what science claims to have discovered, which is, that all is not well in the universe.

Why is the universe here? Some scientists say it shouldn’t exist. But we are here along with the billions of galaxies beyond our solar system. The scientific logical law related to the existence of something says for every effect there has to be a cause. So, they wonder, what or who was the first cause of the universe?

Most Bible-believing theologians would ascribe to the belief that the God of the Bible is the first uncaused cause. In Exodus 3:14 God describes himself as the ever-present “I AM.” And Jesus, whom the New Testament describes as the one through whom God created all things said, “Before Abraham was, I am” (John 8:58). In other words Jesus was referring to His eternal existence as the eternal Word of God who became the Son of God two thousand years ago.

We believe the Bible supplies the best information than any other religious writing in describing a timeless God. Psalm 90:2 reads, “Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever You had formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.” When we observe what some scientists refer to as a fine-tuned universe, the supernatural knowledge and information needed to produce such a universe tell us that God is Omniscient—that He has all knowledge.

What about the “Big Bang” idea? In a short article like this, I cannot go into great detail with the different scientific guesses, and that is what they are, for how the universe supposedly began in the minutest of moments from an extremely small hot area of matter usually referred to as a singularity. The unanswerable question for which no one can supply a scientifically verifiable answer is: Where did the supposed matter come from?

There is amazing order in the universe. Some evolutionists have put their trust in what they see as natural law. At the same time, they would rely on blind random chance occurrences to explain the orderliness and design we observe. But where could natural laws have come from? It is a difficult enough problem for secular scientists to try and explain how nothing produced everything, but even more difficult to explain how nature could come out of nothing with its highly complex organization and purpose. Secular scientists still cannot explain scientifically how intelligence developed in humans. But Bible believers can, In Genesis 1:26,27 we read, “Then God said [obviously with supernatural intelligence], ‘Let us make man in Our image, according to our likeness...male and female He created them.’ ”

Yes, there is supernatural intelligent design in the universe. According to Edwin Hubble’s telescope discoveries, the universe is expanding or stretching at a very fast rate. This is understood to be extremely crucial, because if the rate and distance between the stars varied one way or the other the universe would either become disorderly or collapse in on itself. Gravity is said to be the savior of an orderly universe—something which scientists still cannot explain.

However, the Bible has the real answer. “And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist [Greek: To set or hold together]” (Colossians 1:17). Did you know that Jupiter is our solar system’s protector? We could mention so much more about God’s handiwork, but space is limited.

However, as stated at the beginning of this article, not all things are happy in the universe. The picture above by the title are galaxies that are crashing into one another. Also, the explosion of stars (supernovas) relates to the second law of thermodynamics which indicates that the universe is absorbing huge amounts of energy, that is, getting older and wearing out. Again, the Bible explains:

“You, LORD, in the beginning laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of Your hands. They will perish, but You remain; and they will all grow old like a garment; Like a cloak You will fold them up, and they will be changed. But You are the same, and Your years will not fail.”

So, there will be a dramatic change of order in the future. We can be looking for “...new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells” 2 Peter 3:13).

I think it is a dead-end search going on by a group known as SETI— (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence). For over twenty years this group has been searching for intelligent radio signals coming from outer space. So far, none have been identified. However, one writer says: “A coded message has been received containing the specified complexity that qualifies it, according to SETI’s requirements, as a message from extraterrestrial intelligence. No natural means can explain the clear mark of intelligence we find in the genetic code residing in each of our own cells” (Fred Heeren, Show Me God. Daystar Publications, 1998 77).

Yes, I believe that by itself alone, DNA is all the evidence we need to know there is a Creator God who made this universe and everything in it. We are not alone. Some have expressed the belief that where science ends, the Bible begins. “The heavens declare the glory of God” (Psalm 19:1).
